FC Business announces player and coach development seminar
Ryan McKnight, FC Business editor
Player and coach development should be at the core of any football club. However, the wealth of our leagues and a deterioration in the quality of young players coming through the ranks has us pointing fingers at who is to blame and where this leaves our clubs, our town and cities and, indeed, the values of our game.
The change of football from a sport to a mega-industry in its own right now means a young player competes not only with his peers in his school or even his county, but with players of his age all over the world. The opportunity for local players to play for local clubs is not what is was and, when they can afford players of superior quality, then can we really blame the clubs for looking further afield?
So where does the blame lie? For me, it lies with all parties of the game: the clubs, the leagues, the fans and the governing bodies. After all, there is no doubt that managers would be keen to play more homegrown players if they were of a higher technical level. In turn, the lack of governance/directives from the Premier League or Football League leave the opportunity for effective youth development remaining a low one. |
Finally, unlike the rest of Europe, our governing body does not control youth development. Yes, the FA is tasked with creating coaches, but how that is administered at club level is essentially out of their hands.
Recent FA documents such as the National Game Strategy and Corporate Strategy at least show an appreciation for the problem but, with semi-final places at the next two world cups the aim, can we produce the players to do it?
The FC Business Live Player and Coach Development event will bring together the most important & influential figures in this field. |
 |
Unlike any other event in this country, FC Business Live will give you the chance to share best practice, debate upon the issues that face you, hear from the power brokers in the game and add your opinion and experiences into the day. For anyone involved in player or coach development, this event is a commitment to industry - a commitment to being part of the game.
