Welcome to The Clubhouse - December 2010

It's a Christmas cracker of a newsletter this month as the doors to The Clubhouse open for the final time in 2010. We've got a brand new column, Football and Me, that kicks off with Sky Sports' summer signing Ben Shephard telling us about his football experience away from, and now in front of, the camera.

W
e bring you details of the English FA's Future Game - Grassroots document and news of the Scottish FA's Grassroots Awards. We've also got news of a fantastic award for one Club Website member, footie prizes galore up for grabs in our bumper Christmas competition, a Movember update and a round-up of all our Club Website news. Enjoy the issue!

in the spotlight this month...

Football and Me - Ben Shephard

New to The Clubhouse this month, our column Football and Me will help you get to know some of the country's best known faces and voices from the big wide world of football television and radio.

To kick things off we chat to Sky Sports' newest recruit, Ben Shephard, about his life in and around football, from forging lifelong friendships with his team mates at school to marking the one-and-only Diego Maradona.

We hear Ben's thoughts on his big summer move to Sky Sports, the challenge of working for the biggest name in football broadcasting and why Chris Kamara and Kate Garraway have more in common than meets the eye!

English FA looks to the future with hope

Over 600 grassroots football coaches joined the great and the good of the English game at Wembley stadium last week as the FA launched The Future Game, a document aimed at developing a new generation of technically gifted footballers.

Club Website spoke to Sir Trevor Brooking on what the document means for the future of English football, whilst also getting the thoughts of some of the grassroots coaches present.

Movember 2010: a mo-mentous month!

Club Website members across the country joined forces with all of us here in Club Website HQ last month to raise over £3,200 for men's health charities.

Our 20-strong team grew moustaches for Movember, the month formerly known as November, and raised this serious amount of money just by looking a bit silly.

We'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who joined our team or who donated some money to the cause. Every penny raised is going to a great cause and there's no doubt that we couldn't have done it without you!

Barclays Award for Charioteers' unsung hero

In October's edition of The Clubhouse we brought you news of the Barclays Community Sports Award - a monthly prize that recognises the work of people using the positive power of sport to make a real difference in their community.

We're delighted to announce that November's winner of the award was Simon O'Brien-Ellington, co-founder and secretary of Ipswich Charioteers FC, the only wheelchair football club in Suffolk. Congratulations Simon!

Are you a Club Website competition winner?

Congratulations to Graeme Whillance of Dronfield Town FC who has won a pair of iGOAL v2 goals - the new portable goals from the team at iGOAL. Graeme is the joint manager of the Under 18s Ladies at Dronfield, so we've no doubt these will come in handy for the team at training or on match days!

Well done also to Sharon Boddy, Martin Urwin (South Shields Raiders FC), Simon Maisey, Dianne Parrinder and Phil Maybury (Wombourne Olympic Under 13s), who have each won a copy of 50 years of Football in Focus.

Thanks for all of your entries and congratulations to our winners.

And another thing...

We've still got the pedal to the metal testing our new club website design. We're sorry that some of you have been chomping at the bit for a while now to take a look at it - we're glad you're so keen! - but we are doing all we can to get the beta version ready and rolled out to our administrators as soon as possible.

Elsewhere at Club Website, we brought you a report from the Wembley launch of the FA's Future Game - Grassroots document and we heard from Peter Crouch on the importance of good coaching and small-sided football for young players.

We brought you news of the government's rethink over school sports funding and how England United for their ultimately unsuccessful World Cup bid.

Our poll results found that 60% of you smelled a rat, saying the whole bidding process sounds dodgy, while a whopping 65% of you said that you would support your national FA if they chose to boycott the next World Cup in protest at alleged FIFA corruption. We can't see it happening, but it shows the feeling out there!

Our latest poll has found that 47% of you would welcome a switch to summer for the grassroots football season, while 25% would welcome a winter break. More on that hot topic in January's edition of The Clubhouse!

From the crazy side of football, we told you about the footballer jailed for driving a 4x4 at a referee, whilst our Facebook page featured a video of probably the largest crowd to attend a under 12s game!

As ever, you can always keep up with everything that's happening at Club Website via Facebook or on Twitter by following @clubwebsite. See you there!
